BUSANGRAPHIE 2025는 로컬리티와 크리에이티브를 모토로 지역이 가진 고유한 특성과 문화를 탐구하는 사진축제이다. 올해 첫 오픈을 맞이하는 이 축제는 부산을 중심으로 다양한 지역에서 활동하는 작가들이 자신이 살아가는 공간을 깊이 있게 포착하여, 로컬의 역사⦁문화⦁ 사회적 관계를 사진으로 풀어낸다. 로컬리티는 각 지역이 가진 특유의 역사와 정체성 그리고 사회적 맥락을 다루고, 크리에이티브는 이를 독창적이고 실험적인 방식으로 표현한다. BUSANGRAPHIE는 부산을 중심으로 한 지역의 진지한 탐구를 통해 우리가 살아가는 도시와 공간의 본질을 탐색하고 다양한 지역적 특성과 변화를 사진으로 보여줄 것이다. 이 축제는 부산을 포함한 여러 지역 작가들의 작업을 통해 로컬 창작의 가능성과 문화적 잠재력을 새롭게 조망하며 외부의 시선이 아닌, 지역 작가들이 가진 고유한 시각을 통해 도시와 공간의 내면에 숨겨진 이야기를 조명하는 기회를 제공하며, 기존의 형식을 넘어서 지역 중심의 새로운 방식을 제시, 창작의 중심이자 실험의 장으로 지역이 지닌 고유한 감각과 가능성을 통해 부산을 매개로 한 사진의 새로운 방향을 모색해 나갈 것이다.
애벗(Berenice Abbott, 1898~1991)은 뉴욕을 촬영한 대표적 사진작가이다. 애벗은 카메라만이 오늘날 도시의 빠른 표면을 포착할 수 있으며 모든 사람이 이해할 수 있는 언어를 구사할 수 있다고 말한다. 이것은 한정식(1937~2022)이 ‘사진은 말’이라고 말한 것과 상통한다. 애벗이 제시하는 어떤 도시의 초상을 만든다는 것은 평생이 걸리는 작업이며, 결코 하나의 초상으로는 충분치 않다. 왜냐하면 도시는 항상 변화하고 있기 때문이다. “도시 속의 모든 것은 바로 그 변화를 둘러싼 이야기의 각 부분이다. 벽돌, 돌, 철, 유리, 나무 등이 바로 그 육체이고, 선남선녀들은 그 살아 있는 피다. 거리의 풍경들, 파노라마들, 상공에서 내려다본 것과 바닥에서 올려다본 것, 우아한 것과 부끄러움에 가득 찬 것, 고상한 인생과 천한 세상살이, 비극과 희극, 가난함과 부유함, 거대한 마천루들, 빈민가의 상스러운 장면들, 일하는 사람들, 집안 사람들, 노는 이들 …” 주제전 작가들은 부산의 초상사진 작업을 통해서 해양도시 부산의 가능성을 말해보고자 한다. 해양도시 부산의 초상을 ①부산의 역사 ②부산의 자연⁃환경 ③부산의 구조 ④부산의 라이프-인물 등 4영역으로 세분하여 촬영한 사진 작업을 토대로 한다. ⑤특별전 1은 도시의 주제로 꾸준히 작업해 온 국내작가 7인을 초빙해 구성한다. 부산을 넘어 초월적 도시로서의 사진과 다큐멘터리영화 감독이 제작한 기후변화에 대한 영상과 함께 관람하며 소통할 수 있는 장이다. ⑥특별전 2는 동래야류(동래탈춤극)와 관련한 기록 및 영상작업물을 전시한다. 사진작가들은 무대와 무대 뒤까지 전통놀이의 진솔한 역사적 현장을 꼼꼼하게 기록하고 있으며, 탈과 연희자들의 몸짓을 담은 탈을 쓴 초상사진을 중심으로 전시가 이루어진다. ⑦특별전 3은 외부작가와 사진나무숲의 콜라보 전시작으로써 스페이스포포 갤러리에서 진행한다. 부산이 가지고 있는 역사, 그리고 자연과 더불어 우리들이 일상적인 코드를 가지고 살아가는 모습을 기획하여 전시한다.
BUSANGRAPHIE 2025 is a photography festival that explores the unique characteristics and culture of a region with locality and creativity as its motto. This festival, which is opening for the first time this year, will deeply capture the spaces where artists from various regions centered around Busan live, and interpret the local history, culture, and social relationships through photography. Locality deals with the unique history, identity, and social context of each region, and creativity expresses them in an original and experimental way. BUSANGRAPHIE will explore the essence of the city and space we live in through serious exploration of the region centered around Busan, and show various regional characteristics and changes through photography. This festival will provide a new perspective on the possibilities and cultural potential of local creation through the works of artists from various regions including Busan, and provide an opportunity to shed light on the stories hidden inside the city and space through the unique perspectives of local artists, not from an outside perspective. It will go beyond existing formats and present a new method centered around the region, and seek a new direction for photography mediated by Busan through the unique sensibilities and possibilities of the region as a center of creation and a place for experimentation.
Berenice Abbott (1898–1991) was a prominent photographer known for capturing New York City. She believed that only the camera could truly capture the fast-changing surfaces of the modern city and that it could speak a universal language understood by all. This is in line with what Han Jeong-sik (1937-2022) said, “Photography is a language.” Creating a portrait of a city, as Abbott suggests, is a lifelong task—one that can never be captured in a single image, because the city is always changing. Everything in the city is a part of the story of its constant change. Bricks, stone, iron, glass, and wood are its very body, and the men and women are its living blood. Street scenes and panoramas, views from above and from the ground, the elegant and the shameful, lives of dignity and the grit of the everyday, tragedy and comedy, poverty and wealth, towering skyscrapers and the crude realities of slums, people at work, families at home, and those at play…” The main exhibition artists aim to explore and express the potential of Busan as a maritime city through portrait photography of the city. The portraits of Busan as a maritime city are divided into four areas: ① Busan’s history, ② Busan’s nature and environment, ③ Busan’s structure, and ④ Busan’s life and people. ⑤ Special Exhibition 1 features seven Korean artists who have consistently explored the theme of the city. It is a space for viewing and engaging with photographic works that envision the city beyond Busan—as a transcendent urban entity—alongside a documentary film on climate change created by a film director. ⑥ Special Exhibition 2 exhibits records and video works related to Dongnae Yaryu (Dongnae Mask Dance). Photographers meticulously record the true historical scenes of traditional plays from the stage to the backstage, and the exhibition is centered around portraits of masks and the gestures of performers. ⑦ Special Exhibition 3 is a collaborative exhibition between external artists and Photo Tree Forest, held at spaceFOFO Photo Gallery. It presents a curated exploration of Busan’s history and natural environment, alongside portrayals of everyday life and how we live within it.collaborative exhibition between external artists and the Fotoforest, held at the Spacefofo Gallery.
